A Country Hallway

Nestled in the Leicestershire countryside is this beautiful Grade II listed cottage. We were kindly invited by the lovely owners to come and photograph their new Tumbled Antiqued Ash Limestone flooring. These tiles are the perfect addition to a period property with the tumbled edges, surface and rich grey tones – looking at these stunning photos I’m sure you will agree.
Hallways are not usually the main focus of interior magazines but they are such an important feature, especially when they lead from the entrance of a home. Some hallways do not have much natural light flowing in, so it is important to keep the colour scheme light and warm in order to make the most of the natural light. With brighter and bigger spaces, you can be a bit bolder with colour schemes and there is more room to experiment with larger pieces of furniture.
We love the simple decorative touches in this space – the oak doors and beams complement the oatmeal coloured walls so well. The neutral tones brighten and warm the hallway whilst the ashen and rich grey tones in the flooring add depth to the area. The decorative accessories make the hallway feel homelier – the simple white bench, textured cushion and the beautifully detailed drawers add character without obstructing the space.
Customers often worry about which size tile should be laid in a hallway, especially if it is narrow. We find that laying tiles lengthways across the hall can give the illusion of a wider hallway and more space. The tiles in this hallway are 500xFL (free length) which means that the lengths of the tiles vary but the width remains the same. This is a popular style to use as it achieves a more random appearance than same sized tiles, and is readily sort after in period properties.
This close up photo perfectly shows the detail and texture in the stone. The antiqued finish make it look as though the tiles have been laid for many years and as limestone is a very durable product it is perfect for a hallway which is one of the most used areas of a busy household. Once sealed, natural stone flooring is simple to maintain and clean. The floor can be swept or mopped used warm soapy water, avoiding acidic cleaners like bleach and using neutral pH cleaners instead.
