Do It Yourself
7th March 2017
As you may remember from my previous blogs, I really do love to refurbish furniture! Well, here I am again. It appears I really have caught the bug for renovating old furniture. As easy as it is to buy furniture readily made, I’ve realised that it is so much more fun and rewarding to do it yourself, so we did and I am so excited to share with you our success.
We knew we wanted a new dining room table but our existing table was still in pretty good condition so it seemed like it would be a waste to completely get rid of it, so we came up with this idea. Instead of replacing the whole table, we decided to just replace the table top and give the legs a lick of paint. We were quite keen to go for the farmhouse style so after a little bit of research, we found what we were looking for.
We bought long planks of wood, which we cut down to size and fixed together. Once it was all fixed together, the next job was to sand the table top and paint the legs. It took a little bit of sanding to get the smooth, lighter look we were going for. I used a chalk paint for the legs of the table to give it more of an antiqued finish.
After having done our research we found that having a mixture of chairs and a bench would be the perfect combination. Not only does it look pretty cool but it also gives you a lot more space instead of having four chairs. Practical as well as looking good! The bench we again considered buying but then it appeared we had a lot of wood leftover so we thought, well why not make one from scratch? So that’s exactly what we did. We painted the bench the same as the table legs so it all matched nicely and fixed planks of wood to the top of the bench so it also matched the table. The final step was to stain the wood and to do this we used a clear varnish to keep it looking as rustic as possible.
Here are the before and after pictures and I couldn’t have been any happier with the final finish of them. What a difference we have made!
We really could not be any happier with how it has turned out. There is something so rewarding about renewing your old furniture (especially when it makes such a difference like this!)
Not only did we decide to renew the dining room table, we also spotted (another) little bargain that we could not resist. We had recently spent some time looking for a new coffee table but we hadn’t yet had any luck in finding the perfect one… until we stumbled across this hidden little gem.
We knew it was going to need some work doing to it to make it what we wanted but considering what we had already achieved, this was going to be no problem. Again, it was going to be a case of sanding down the top to get a lighter look and painting the legs. This is exactly what we did, and again, we were thrilled with the results.
The final little project which we have also done was another bargain that caught my eye whilst wandering around a car boot sale. Having never been to one before, I wasn’t really sure what to expect but when I found this, I knew it wasn’t going to be a wasted journey. Floor lamps are always good to have and they are so easy to revamp that when I was told this was £2 to purchase, how was I ever going to say no?! All it needed was a lick of paint and a new lamp shade and there we had it.
It is so exciting having little projects to do and there is nothing more satisfying than completing another one. Keep your eyes peeled as I am confident there will be more renovated furniture coming up very soon.
