Hygge

My friend and I have always had a slight obsession with making dens. We lived together throughout University, and whenever we were at a loss of what to do, we’d gather all the blankets, cushions, quilts and pillows we could find and create a little nest. We’d dim the lights, make a hot chocolate, light lots of candles and snuggle on down to watch a film. Our flatmates thought we were slightly mad!
But now we have the last laugh. You may have seen the latest trend sweeping the world…Hygge.

I call it a trend, but it’s actually a way of life in Denmark that the rest of the world is slowly catching on to. It’s not just creating a den and hiding away from the world, it’s having friends around to enjoy a homemade meal; taking time to sit down and immerse yourself in a book; just spending time with family and enjoying their company. You can see why it has become part of the Danish way of life, and why they are one of the happiest nations in the world!

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) is at its peak as the weather becomes cooler and we all feel the need to hibernate – not that hygge is purely a winter thing, it just seems the perfect excuse to spend a cosy evening in with friends. It has no direct translation into English, but it encompasses happiness, cosiness, simplicity, familiarity, security and comfort. It can be a feeling, a moment, an atmosphere.

So if you’re at a loose end this weekend, invite some friends over, light all the candles you have and enjoy a yummy home cooked meal (or even a take away!) Put away phones, laptops and TVs and just enjoy each other’s company and the simple things in life. We don’t do enough of that nowadays.
